Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students

- broaden their perspectives about teacher education by reviewing and conceptualizing critical issues related to the preparation and professional development of prospective and in-service mathematics teachers

- use their developing perspectives to analyze current issues in mathematics teacher education

- examine the complex relationship among beliefs, knowledge, and attitudes in mathematics teacher education.


Course Content

Investigating and analyzing current issues in mathematics teacher education. Reviewing and conceptualizing critical issues related to preparation and professional development of prospective and inservice mathematics teachers. Meaning and implications of complex relationship among beliefs, knowledge and attitudes in mathematics teacher education.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to 

  • Develop insight into and be familiar with the research literature on mathematics teacher education,
  • Realize the recommendations of various research studies for teacher education programs in mathematics,
  • Enhance the understanding about different ways to study teaching and teachers,
  • Critique research methodologies of the studies on mathematics teaching,
  • Propose research questions on the study of mathematics teaching,
  • Discuss issues concerning designing professional development programs or courses for prospective or inservice teachers.
