Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to help students explore a topic of interest under close supervision. In the course, the students are expected to conduct a research study, write a research report and make an oral presentation of their independent study project.


Course Content

Individual research or study with a faculty member, arranged in advance of registration. A one- or two page written proposal should be submitted to the instructor during the first week of the term specifying the scope of the project activities, meeting times, completion date, and student products.


Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students are expected to:

- propose research questions on the study of learning and teaching mathematics

- synthesize the research studies relevant to the focus of the research problem

- develop a research methodology to study an issue/problem in mathematics education.

- collect and analyze data

- write a research report

- present the results of the research study in class

- review and critique classmates’ research studies
