Course Objectives
The students are expected to:
- Explore the role of technology in contemporary school mathematics teaching and learning.
- Understand the content (what), methods (how), and materials (tools) necessary to teach mathematics in a technologically oriented society.
- Examine and become familiar with various technologies (e.g., computer software, Web-based/virtual manipulatives, graphing calculators and/or handheld devices, etc.) and technology-based lesson materials.
- Learn about major research issues in teaching mathematics within a technology-assisted/oriented environment.
- Construct/build a technology-assisted learning environment that supports the teaching and learning of meaningful mathematics.
Course Content
Exploring the role of technology in contemporary school mathematics teaching and learning. Understanding the content (what), methods (how), and materials (tools) necessary to teach mathematics in a technologically oriented society. Examining and becoming familiar with various technologies (dynamic geometry/mathematics environments,spreadsheets, graphing software, computer algebra systems, Web-based/ virtual manipulatives, graphing calculator and/or handlheld devices, etc.) and technology-based lesson materials. Learning about major research issues in teaching mathematics within a technology assisted/oriented environment. Constructing/building a technology assisted learning environment that supports the teaching and learning of meaningful mathematics.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to:
- understand and interpret the role of technology in teaching and learning contemporary school mathematics.
- explain and apply the content (what), methods (how), and materials (tools) necessary to teach mathematics in a technologically oriented society.
- use various technologies (dynamic geometry/mathematics environments, spreadsheets, graphing software, computer algebra systems, Web-based/ virtual manipulatives, graphing calculator and/or handheld devices, etc.) to develop technology-based lesson materials.
- develop an understanding of major research issues in teaching mathematics within a technology-assisted/oriented environment.
- develop a technology-assisted learning kit that supports the teaching and learning of a mathematical topic.
