Course Objectives
- Students will gain an understanding of key concepts in probability, statistics, and calculus;
- Students will engage in activities related to these concepts;
- Students will be familiar with common student misconceptions and difficulties in probability, statistics, and calculus;
- Students will use appropriate technology for teaching probability, statistics, and calculus;
- Students will discuss and apply teaching methods for probability, statistics, and calculus topics;
- Students will develop and implement instructional materials and lesson plans for teaching probability, statistics, and calculus topics in grades 9-12.
Course Content
Probabilistic and statistical thinking; Misconceptions and difficulties in probability, statistics and calculus; teaching and learning probability, statistics and calculus.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, each student should be able to:
- understand the essential basic concepts related to probability, statistics, and calculus and the relations between them
- prepare activities for effective teaching and learning of probability, statistics, and calculus
- develop understanding of students’ ways of thinking related to probability, statistics, and calculus
- use information and communication technologies for effective teaching of probability, statistics, and calculus
- acknowledge the importance of tools, materials, and technology used in teaching and learning of probability, statistics, and calculus
- recognize the importance of collaborative work
- design and implement a lesson plan/activity on probability, statistics, and calculus topics in the secondary school mathematics curriculum
- take pleasure in participating in learning and teaching activities
