Course Objectives

Develops an understanding of the mathematical concepts involving whole numbers, integers, fractions and rational numbers.

Differentiates the types of the problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and develops ways of representations for each type of problem situations involving operations with numbers.

Engages in activities involving the number concepts such as natural numbers, number bases, integers, divisibility, LCM and GCD, rate and ratio concepts, rational and irrational numbers, rate and ratio, real numbers, exponents and radicals, sets.

Understands students’ alternative conceptions and possible difficulties related to learning number concepts.
Course Content
Developing an understanding of the mathematical concepts involving whole numbers, place value, integers, fractions and rational numbers. Making sense with rate and ratio concepts and developing proportional reasoning. Discussing the types of the problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and developing ways of representations for each type of problem situations involving operations with numbers. A review of students alternative conceptions and possible difficulties related to learning number concepts.
