Course Objectives
- Students will gain an understanding of teaching mathematics through problem solving;
- Students will engage in activities related to mathematical problem solving;
- Students will understand the importance of conceptual understanding in mathematics education;
- Students will be familiar with common student misconceptions and difficulties in mathematics;
- Students will explore and evaluate different methods and strategies for teaching mathematical concepts;
- Students will develop and evaluate instructional materials and lesson plans for teaching mathematics in grades 9-12.

How to learn mathematics; SOLO taxonomy; APOS theory; Proof Schemas; Misconceptions and Diagnosis, how to use nature of Mathematics and history of mathematics for teaching and learning mathematics, Discovery learning; Cooperative learning; Problem solving; questioning and discussion; Mathematics Laboratory; Use of Calculators and Computer Applications in Mathematics Education; 5E Learning Cycle Approach; Micro-teachings
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, each student should be able to:
- apply different mathematical problem-solving strategies to solve mathematics problems;
- apply the problem-solving process to solve mathematics problems;
- understand the purpose of using problem solving method;
- understand the assessment techniques of outcomes of problem-solving method;
- develop understanding of students’ misconceptions in mathematics
- use information and communication technologies for effective teaching of mathematics
- acknowledge the importance of tools, materials, and technology used in teaching and learning of mathematics
- recognize the importance of collaborative work
- design and evaluate a lesson plan/activity on topics in the secondary school mathematics curriculum
- take pleasure in participating in learning and teaching activities
