Course Objectives
The main objective of this course to equip engineers and professionals particularly in mining industry with the knowledge and information pertinent to mine safety and health management.
Course Content
History and overview of mine health and safety; industrial hygiene in mining; control of respirable dust; noise; ground control issues for safety professionals; mine fires and explosions; mining explosives; haulage; electrical safety; emergency preparedness and response; job safety analysis, task analysis and observation; safety communications, incident reporting and analysis; management strategy and system for education and training and engineering for health and safety in mining.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Recognize the significance of safety in mining industry and become familiar to the legal aspects and historical mine accidents in the world and in Turkey.
- Gain in depth knowledge about industrial hygiene including heat, noise, illumination, and vibration related problems and safety standards in mines.
- Improve the recognition of safety issues in haulage design and ground control in both surface and underground mining.
- Describe and outline accident prevention methods.
- Implement a qualitative risk assessment as a team work and present their findings in a project completion.
- Recognize the significance of emergency preparedness and response.
