Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the students will:

  • Learn the details of fluid kinematics, flow lines, and differential and integral formulation of fluid motion.
  • Learn Navier Stokes Equations and Vorticity Transport Equations.
  • Learn vortex lines, tubes, vorticity generation mechanisms, effect of pressure gradient on boundary layer, flow separation, and the basics of flow instability and turbulence.

Course Content

Fundamental concepts. Mathematical preliminaries. Fundamental equations of flow. Analysis of motion. Analysis of forces, stresses. Equations of flow theorems. Incompressible potential flow. (F)


Course Learning Outcomes

Student, who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:

  • Formulate the fluid kinematics, material derivative, flow lines, and Cauchy Stokes decomposition.
  • Apply integral formulation for control volumes both in inertial and non inertial reference frames.
  • Formulate and solve differential equations of motions including Navier Stokes Equations and Vorticity Transport Equations.
  • Understand vortex lines, tubes, vorticity generation mechanisms, effect of pressure gradient on boundary layer, flow separation, and the basics of flow instability and turbulence.
