Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the student will learn:

  • main charactersitics of pelagic zooplankton in the oceans
  • basic concepts in methodology of sampling zooplanktonic organisms for abundance and biomass analysis
  • the distribution of zooplankton in terms of latitudes
  • the vertical migration of zooplanton in the water column
  • feeding behaviours of zooplanktonic main groups.

Course Content

Introduction to marine zooplankton. General characteristics and classification. Sampling and processing techniques. Vertical migration and distributions. Physiology of zooplankton. Interaction with other marine organisms and relation to fisheries.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course,

1. Students will do zooplankton sampling

2. Students will be able to do biomass and abundance analysis of zooplanktonic samples

3. Students will classify main groups of zooplankton under the microscope

4. Students will know the distribution of zooplankton in the oceans
