Course Objectives

Students are expected to develop a nuanced understanding of the Cold War period by focusing on social, cultural and economic issues and to develop their analytical skills to examine contemporary issues by taking into account social and cultural factors. Students are also expected to develop their ability to work with primary source material such as films, songs and literary pieces.

 


Course Content

The purpose of this course is to examine the social history of the Cold War by focusing on the agency of society/societies and the limitations imposed on it/them by bipolar world politics. Against the backdrop of fast technological changes which shaped modern communications, warfare and consumption, this course seeks answers to the questions of how Cold War Society was shaped, and how society stood against the Cold War order.
