Course Objectives

By the end of the course the students will:

  • observe the needs, preferences and values of diverse user groups and stakeholders for product and interface design
  • make use of user research to inform idea generation and design decision-making
  • combine various generative, evaluative, and presentation methods and techniques throughout a design process
  • know and apply sustainability considerations in relation to product design
  • show concern for the larger economic, socio-cultural, environmental and technological context of design

Course Content

Sustainability approach to product design, biomimicry for sustainability, effective use of resources, user empowerment. Awareness of the larger context of design, participatory techniques, collaborative scenario development. Understanding local values, needs and preferences, post-use design thinking, re-use and personalization. Advanced presentation techniques.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

  • carry out and manage complex design projects from brief to delivery of final proposals
  • conduct and present literature/online searches on a given project topic
  • conduct user research via observation, interview, and participatory evaluative/generative sessions
  • extract hierarchical design insights from research, to inform and direct design decision-making
  • conceive and develop product and interface design solutions that leverage stakeholders’ skills and knowledge
  • develop design solutions that integrate sustainability considerations specific to a project
  • present design solutions and design details through a combination of sketching, physical modelling and computer modelling
  • complete assignments and exercises as individuals and members of a team
