Course Objectives
This seminar aims to explore the historical development of nationhood, with a focus on the transformation of the concept of nationality in the late 19th-century Ottoman Empire. Through an interactive examination of nationalism among non-Muslim communities and the Turkish community within the Empire, students will critically analyze how nationhood was shaped by social, political, and cultural dynamics.
Course Content
The course is designed to present the development of nationhood in the historical setting with due attention to the change in the concept of nationality in the late nineteenth-century Ottoman Empire. The relations between the development of nationalism and the notion of nation among the non-Muslim communities, and the development of nationhood in the Turkish community of the Empire will be examined interactively.
