Course Objectives
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the political, economic, and social developments in Turkey from 1945 to 1990. By engaging with different historiographical perspectives, students will critically evaluate various explanations of Turkish political and economic transformations in this period. The course encourages analytical thinking and comparative discussions to explore key debates shaping modern Turkish history.
Course Content
The course revolves around selected topics in recent Turkish history which have relevance in shaping Turkish politics and the economy from 1945 to 1990. It examines readings written from different viewpoints that try to explain Turkish political, economic and social history for this period. The aim of the course is to discuss and critically evaluate these various comparing explanations that have been provided for Turkish political and economic development.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Explain major political, economic, and social transformations in Turkey between 1945 and 1990.
Compare and evaluate different historiographical perspectives on Turkish history in this period.
Analyze the impact of domestic and international factors on Turkish political and economic development.
Assess the role of key political actors, institutions, and ideologies in shaping modern Turkey.
Critically engage with secondary sources to interpret historical narratives.
Develop well-reasoned arguments regarding the evolution of Turkish politics and economy in the second half of the 20th century.
