Course Objectives

  • To enhance students’ ability to read and interpret advanced Ottoman Turkish manuscripts.

  • To develop proficiency in writing Sülüs and Rika scripts with accuracy and precision.

  • To introduce students to key terminology and stylistic conventions used in Ottoman historical sources.

  • To provide a methodological framework for the critical examination of Ottoman documents.

  • To strengthen analytical and transliteration skills necessary for academic research in Ottoman history.


Course Content

The students will have to work advanced Ottoman paleography, and writing and reading Sülüs (decorative writing) and rika (normal hand writing) from selected Ottoman chronicles. The course also offers a methodical introduction to the special terminology encountered in Ottoman studies.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Read and accurately transcribe selected Ottoman texts written in Sülüs and Rika.

Develop practical skills in writing Ottoman Turkish using traditional script styles.

Recognize and interpret specialized terminology in Ottoman historical documents.

Apply methodological approaches to analyze and contextualize primary Ottoman sources.

Utilize Ottoman paleographic skills in advanced historical research and archival studies.
