Course Objectives
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the historical interactions between the Ottoman Empire and the Italian states from 1453 to 1683. It will explore key political, diplomatic, military, and cultural encounters while examining how the image of the "Turk" was constructed and evolved in Italy. By analyzing historical sources, literary texts, religious discourse, and artistic representations, students will gain insights into the mutual perceptions, ideological conflicts, and cross-cultural exchanges that shaped Ottoman-Italian relations within the broader European context.
Course Content
The course is aimed at providing the student of history-as well as any student interested in the area-with: a)the main historic events which occurred in the relations between the Ottoman Empire and the Italian States from 1453 to 1683, having a chronological consideration for the rest of Europe. b)Also in the light of the above, giving a picture of the creation of the image of the Turk, as the Ottomans were simply called by the Italians and the rest of Europe. The course studies the development and variations in the image of the Turk and that of Islam in Italy from 1453 to 1683, from the political, religious, folkloristic, military and iconographic points of view.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Identify and explain the major historical events that shaped Ottoman-Italian relations between 1453 and 1683.
Analyze how the image of the "Turk" and Islam developed in Italy during this period, considering political, religious, folkloristic, military, and iconographic perspectives.
Evaluate primary and secondary sources related to Ottoman-Italian encounters, including diplomatic reports, literary works, and visual representations.
Discuss the broader European context of Ottoman-Italian interactions and how these relations influenced perceptions of the Ottoman Empire across Europe.
Critically engage with historiographical debates regarding the construction of the "Turk" in Italian thought and its impact on European-Ottoman relations. Develop historical arguments based on evidence and effectively communicate their interpretations in written and oral form.
