Course Objectives

  • Enabling the students to understand ideology and practice of fascism in order to develop a notion of sensitivity concerning current political developments
  • Enabling the students to understand the relation of fascism to socio-political structures having begun to dominate within the framework of the outcome of contemporary nation states since the French Revolution
  • Enabling the students to understand differences and common grounds between world views and ideologies.
  • Enabling the students to understand political, social, economic and cultural reasons for the emergence and rise of authoritarian/totalitarian movements, and furthermore to understand, analyze and evaluate specific reasons for their coming into power in certain countries

Course Content

The objective of this course is – after having presented a short history of fascist movements and fascism in power- to give an overview of the actual theories of fascism. It should be also taken into consideration the discussion of the twenties and thirties, where it was tried first to analyze this phenomenon scientifically in order to develop effective antifascist strategies especially in Germany and Italy.


Course Learning Outcomes

After a successful completion of the course the students should be able to:

  • Understand reasons why individuals sometimes are relatively open for right-wing/fascist propaganda
  • Make as sort of self-reflection concerning individual tendencies to behave exclusively to certain groups in society.
  • Develop effective strategies against fascism(s), both on individual and social levels
