Course Objectives
This course is designed to teach students
(1) The basic equations governing groundwater flow and mass transport processes
(2) Fundamental concepts of groundwater and mass transport modeling
(3) The main subjects related to groundwater contamination
(4) The basic remediation procedures in relation to groundwater contamination
Course Content
Fundamental concepts of groundwater contamination and modeling. Derivation of solute transport equations and dispersion coefficients. Analytical and numerical methods for solving groundwater contamination problems. Modeling ground water contamination and sea-water intrusion.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students will learn
1) Variables controlling fluid flow in porous media
2) Variables controlling mass transport in porous media
3) Analytical solution of flow and mass transport equations
4) Numerical solution of flow and mass transport equations
5) How to incorporate chemical reactions into mass transport processes
6) Flushing, pump&treat, reactive/nonreactive barrier simulations in numerical environment
