Course Objectives

Application of geological mapping practice in the field. Obtaining skills on collection of geological field data, its analysis and presentation.

Course Content

Topographic maps. Use of compass, altimeter and GPS in the field. Tracing and plotting of geological contacts and geological features onto topographic maps. Field description of rocks and geological features. Field study of outcrop-scale features. Measuring stratigraphic sections. Sampling. Preparation of geological illustrations, cross-sections and writing a geological report. (Field studies are carried out as daily trips on weekends within the semester and either as daily trips or as field camps following final exams of the semester.)

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students are expected to be fluent in geological mapping on 1/25.000 scale topographical maps and various imagery. They are expected to excell on identification of geological structures and their mapping in the field, expert on various oriented and spot sampling techniques, and they acquire extensive knowledge on collection and analysis of orientation data in the field.
