Course Objectives
This course focuses on the linguistic analysis and description of Turkish and English phonological, morphological and syntactic structures and the application of semantic and pragmatic approaches to the analysis.
Course Content
An introduction to the contrastive analysis of Turkish and English. Comparing English and Turkish with respect to their phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantics systems. Phonetics: Consonants and vowels; word stress. Syntax: the structure of the simple clause; phrase structure; embedding. Semantics: tense, aspect and modality in Turkish and English; the perfective and non-perfective aspect; epistemic and deontic modality.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon succesful completion of the course, students will be able to
1) understand the phonological, morphological and syntactic differences between the English and the Turkish languages.
2) conduct a linguistic research on the linguistic similarities and differences between the English and the Turkish languages.
3) analyze linguistic difficulties in learning Turkish and English languages as a foreign language.
