Course Objectives

Participants in this course will learn:

  • historical and contemporary theories and research in (first/second) language acquisition that explain various aspects of language development
  • a wide range of research research designs and traditional utilized in SLA research investigating various issues in SLA
  • understand and apply knowledge of linguistic, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic and sociocultural approaches to SLA
  • how to establish a dynamic connection between SLA knowledge and second language teaching

Course Content

Surveying current research in language acquisition with special emphasis on similarities and differences between child and adult language and between native and foreign language acquisition.


Course Learning Outcomes

Participants successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • demonstrate a thorough understanding of the current and historical theories and research in language acquisition as applied to English language learners
  • critically evaluate various explanations offered for a wide range of phenomena in SLA
  • interpret relevant SLA research that will inform English language teaching
  • pose new questions about relevant issues in SLA research
  • evaluate the nature and extent of empirical support for SLA theories
