Course Objectives

We will explore the theory and practice of creative nonfiction by examining a variety of forms, including list essay, memoir, personal writing, narrative journalism, travel essay, documentary and such. Meanwhile, we will also learn the core elements of nonfiction, such as voice, character, point of view and scene while exploring how these elements can be used to improve factual description. Emphasis will be placed on building self-confidence and developing students' individual voice as writers and story tellers.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:

  • grasped the basic dimensions of creative nonfiction —  what the term implies, the forms it takes, its craft elements
  • been exposed to different nonfiction genres and numerous voices to start to develop their own
  • experimented with some of the forms discussed in class.

Course Content

Creative non-fiction is a combination of literature and real life. We all have stories to tell — about ourselves, the lives of others and the world around us. In this class, you will learn how to tell your own story in your own way. We will explore the theory and practice of creative nonfiction by reading and writing in a variety of forms, including list essay, memoir, travel writing and personal essay. Meanwhile, we will also learn the core elements of nonfiction, such as voice, character, point of view and scene.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students can:

  • detect and define the core elements of nonfiction
  • identify key ideas in a nonfiction piece
  • evaluate and reflect on those ideas
  • experiment with different genres / forms of nonfiction
  • integrate literary elements into their own writing and/or filming
  • write a short nonfiction piece in at least two different genres
  • prepare a 4-5 minute presentation or short film
