Offered Semester: | Fall or Spring Semesters. |
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Develop a foundational understanding of empirical linguistic research methods, particularly in the analysis of spoken discourse.
Gain practical skills in audiovisual recording and the annotation of verbal and non-verbal communication.
Apply transcription and segmentation techniques systematically using established transcription systems.
Use digital tools for linguistic tasks such as morphological transliteration, prosodic analysis, and discourse classification.
Analyze utterances as basic units of meaning within interactional contexts.
Integrate computer-assisted corpus linguistic techniques into spoken language research.
Conduct and critically reflect on selected case studies involving the computer-assisted analysis of naturally occurring spoken data.
Course Content
This course familiarizes with the basic methods of empirical linguistic research as: audiovisual recording of verbal and non verbal communication, constellation and its description, transcribing and transcription systems, segmentation of transcripts, morphological transliteration, translation, prosody, patterns of action, style of speaking, discourse types etc. Basic unit of analysis is the ‘utterance’. A computer program with several components is applied to various steps of linguistic analysis. Computer assisted techniques of corpus linguistics of spoken language(s) in various institutional settings will be dealt with. Some exemplary analyses of selected phenomena of spoken language(s) will be spelled out.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Identify and describe the main stages of empirical spoken language data collection and transcription.
Apply appropriate transcription conventions and segment spoken language data using digital tools.
Analyze spoken utterances for morphological, prosodic, and discourse features.
Employ computer-assisted tools (e.g., ELAN, Praat, EXMARaLDA, or similar) to annotate and examine spoken corpora.
Interpret interactional data using relevant linguistic and discourse-analytic frameworks.
Conduct corpus-based investigations of spoken language in institutional contexts.
Critically evaluate methodological choices and findings in published research on spoken language corpora.
Design and carry out a small-scale empirical project using computer-assisted techniques for linguistic analysis.
