Offered Semester:Fall and Spring Semesters.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Demonstrate a deep understanding of key statistical concepts and procedures relevant to empirical research in English Language Teaching (ELT).

Identify and classify different types of variables and data structures typically encountered in ELT research.

Select and justify appropriate statistical tests and techniques based on research questions, hypotheses, and data types.

Apply statistical methods to real or simulated ELT research data using computer-based statistical packages (e.g., SPSS, JASP, R).

Interpret and critically evaluate statistical results in the context of applied linguistics and language education studies.

Communicate statistical findings clearly and accurately in written form, following academic and disciplinary conventions.

Reflect on the implications of quantitative findings for theory, pedagogy, and policy in ELT.

Course Content

Basic statistical concepts and tools such as types of variables and data in ELT studies; ways of measuring differential outcomes of empirical/comparative language studies through applying these to projects and interpreting the results for their implications to ELT. Statistical packages on computer.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Define and explain core statistical concepts used in ELT research.

Identify suitable statistical tests based on research design and data type.

Conduct statistical analyses using software tools such as SPSS, JASP, or R.

Interpret outputs of statistical procedures in relation to ELT research questions.

Critically evaluate the use and reporting of statistics in published ELT studies.

Present statistical findings in clear, accurate, and academically appropriate formats.

Apply statistical reasoning to inform research-based decisions in ELT contexts.
