Course Objectives
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to
*list, define, explain and use special terms related to culture, ELT and teaching culture in ELT
*present, compare and contrast the basic theories of culture and language use
*discuss the prejudices and cultural stereotypes
*illustrate the relationship between language, culture and language teaching
*compare rhetorical preferences of different cultures (principally those of English and Turkish cultures)
*interpret data coming from language classrooms including cultural components
*device and conduct research examining the relationship between language learning/teaching and culture
Course Content
Providing language teachers with a basis for introducing a cultural component into their teaching; significance of culture in teaching English as a foreign language; perspectives on how language and culture interact, and on the significant distinction between understanding and participating in a foreign culture.
