Course Objectives

Familiarize students with fundamental concepts in language testing, evaluation, assessment, and statistics.

Introduce the stages of test development.

Assess language skills and areas of knowledge.

Apply various types of assessment in relevant applied linguistics projects.


Course Content

Major aspects of English language testing: item analysis and interpretation of test scores; subjective and objective tests; procedures in preparing different kinds of test items appropriate for testing different language skills; practice in item writing and statistical methods.


Course Learning Outcomes

(i) Critique of item and task types in different types of tests

(ii) Critique and application of the qualities of useful tests through project work

(iii) Application and specialization in the testing of  one or two language skills or areas

(iv) Becoming aware of the link between testing, syllabus design, and teaching.

(v) Keeping abreast with the latest trends in language testing.
