Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the student will learn:

  • the context in which Edmund Spenser wrote
  • Spenser's works, including The Faerie Queen
  • to approach his poetry as representative specimens of Elizabethan poetry

Course Content

Spencers works, especially, The Faerie Queene, will be discussed as representative specimens of Elizabethan poetry.

  • read and understand Spenser's poetry
  • critically approach the relationship between the context of his poetry and the poems themselves
  • identify its position within the larger Elizabethan poetry
  • write critical research papers on Spenser's poetry examples
