Course Objectives
Knowledge and skills on the following aspects of medical imaging will be given to the students: Image reconstruction with non-diffracting sources in two dimensions, image reconstruction with non-diffracting sources in three dimensions, algebraic reconstruction algorithms. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. Ultrasonic computed tomography, tomographic imaging with diffracting sources, ultrasonic reflection tomography. New imaging modalities.
Course Content
Physical principles of x-Ray NMR, ultrasound and nuclear imaging as applied to medicine. Mathematical formulation of the imaging problem for these modalities. Backprojection, convolution, Fourier and Algebraic techniques of image reconstruction. Data acquisition techniques and hardware considerations. New imaging modalities and application areas.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students will
- understand the basic properties of medical imaging systems
- obtain essential knowledge of the principles, characteristics, and limitations of X-ray Computed Tomography, Ultrasound Imaging, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, as well as the underlying physics
- explore and understand the need for alternative medical imaging techniques
- develop numerical models for X-Ray computed tomography
