Course Objectives

This course is concerned with teaching the fundamentals of school counseling to students in teaching programs. It covers such topics as the role and functions of school counselors, the services of a comprehensive school counseling program, the role of teachers in relation to this program, classroom guidance techniques for teachers, effective helping skills for teachers, and  the process of effective consultation, . 


Course Content

Purposes of student personality services and their place in education, introduction to guidance services in schools, principles of guidance, diagnosing and guiding students, collection and use of data on student counselling, placement, follow-up advising, research and evaluation, relations with parents and beyond the school community, vocational guidance, purposes of special education, identifying students with special learning needs.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will;

  • understand the relationship between school counseling and the broader counseling profession,
  • describe a comprehensive school counseling program,
  • understand the process of helping,
  • develop skills of helping,
  • distinguish the different group procedures used by school counselors and classroom guidance teachers,
  • describe the different ways of consultation used by teachers and school counselors,
