Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain the structure of major affective variables and their relationship to one another
  • explain the process of scale development
  • describe scaling options, item formats, and scoring methods
  • critically evaluate psychometric quality of instruments
  • distinguish between various types of reliability and validity
  • describe the relationship of reliability to validity
  • write about theoretical concepts underlying the construction of a scale and develop appropriate test items for the scale
  • identify when factor analysis is appropriate
  • apply factor analysis to real data and interpret the results from factor analysis
  • communicate for the discipline by creating, piloting, analyzing, writing, and reporting on an original scale designed for the class
