Course Objectives
- explain the functions of schools in society with a special focus on democratic education and inclusive education,
- explain the fundamental concepts of inclusive education,
- describe the effects of schooling on the reproduction of (un)equality in society,
- describe the major sociological themes related to inclusive education such as difference, power, equality, marginalization, discrimination, stereotypes, privilege, ability, etc.,
- explain the current status of the teaching profession in teaching and instruction for inclusion,
- develop a critical understanding of and interest in the teaching profession.
Course Content
Foundational knowledge about the sociology and philosophy of inclusive education; the relation between democratic education, inclusive education and marginalized groups in society; the effects of schooling on the reproduction of (un)equality in society; major sociological themes such as difference, power, equality, marginalization, discrimination, stereotypes, privilege, ability etc.; basic skills of teaching and instruction for inclusion; questioning the ideology of normalcy; effective teacher characteristics for inclusive education; and the current issues in inclusive and democratic education.
