Course Objectives
The course aims to provide the students with the basic definitions and certain theorems of introductory real analysis and their economic applications.
At the end of the course, the student is expected to have acquired a certain level of mathematical analysis background and to have the insight of its main uses in economic theory.
Course Content
The course is an introduction to mathematical analysis with economic applications. Topics covered are set theory; Cauchy sequences; lim inf and lim sup; the finite dimensional metric space of real vectors; convergence; completeness; separability; compactness; continuity; Lipchitz and uniform continuity; connectedness, topics from finite dimensional convex analysis; applications.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to :
Apply basic theorems and techniques of analysis to economic contexts.
Use real analysis in economic theory.
Identify Pareto efficient allocations in certain simple economic settings.
Construct proofs for basic theorems in introductory real analysis.
Use basic logical and set theoretic arguments.
Answer basic questions about cardinalities of sets.
Identify Cauchy sequences and construct a proof for verification.
Find the liminf and limsup of a sequence of real numbers.
Determine whether a given relation on a set satisfies the properties of a weakly ordered set, a partially ordered set and/or a lattice.
Determine whether certain given subsets are dense in real numbers or not.
Determine whether certain given subsets of a metric space are compact or not.
