Course Objectives

This course offers an in-depth exploration of how gender intersects with education, focusing on how gender influences and is influenced by educational systems around the world. Students will examine key concepts such as gender and sex, and analyze how these constructs shape individual experiences and broader societal outcomes in education. The course presents a range of theoretical perspectives to understand the impact of gender on both students and educators.

Throughout the course, students will critically examine gender stereotypes in curricula, teaching practices, and educational materials such as children’s books and textbooks. They will also investigate the barriers to education that both boys and girls face. Key topics include gender disparities in academic outcomes, gendered experiences within school environments, and how gender affects academic achievement and subject choices.


Course Content

Introduction of the theories and empirical research in the field of gender equity in education. Analysis of sources of the gender differentiation in early childhood and elementary classrooms. Discussion of gender equity in the classrooms.
