Course Objectives

This course will enable students to understand the process of state-building in the post-Soviet transformation. The course aims to introduce students to the main theoretical debates concerning the processes of state-building and nation-building, preferences over regime type, market economy, institution-building and institutional design, elections and political participation, and the role of political leaders in the post-Soviet context.


Course Content

The focus of this course will be on the some theoretical concerns related to nations, nationalism, democracy, governmental mechanisms, institution building and ethnicity in relation to the dynamics of state-building and nationality problems and policies in the context of post-Soviet period states. The course is divided by issue and not by geographical area or republic. These issues include state-building, history, elite structures and electoral behavior where applicable.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students:

  • will have a good general knowledge of all aspects of state-building in Eurasia,
  • be familiar with theoretical debates on transition, democratization, state-building and nation-building,
  • identify similarities and differences among post-Soviet states and societies,
  • develop oral and written skills.
