Course Objectives

Having successfully completed this course, the student will be able to

  • understand deformation, stress, strain, and deflection concepts
  • understand the strength of material and the scale of structure

Course Content

Simple stress and strain. Equilibrium, compatibility and constitutive relations. State of stress and state of strain with emphasis on two dimensional problems. Bending and shear stresses. Deflection of beams. Torsion of circular shafts. Combined stresses. Buckling of columns.

An ability to understand stress and strain concepts

An ability to find stresses for axial force, bending moment, shear force and combined loading

An ability to find principal stresses and directions

An ability to learn how to compute deflections in the  beams

An ability to have basic knowledge in buckling of columns
