Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with the general concept and context of urban geography and to enable them not only to grasp the theoretical implications as spatial dimension of the urban pattern but also to underline the links with the abstract socio-economic space. The course also aims to lay down the urban spatial basis for reinterpretation of subjects taken up in economic, social and political courses in urban context, in inter-urban system of cities and also intra-urban analysis involving processes going on in cities.


Course Content

Discusses settlement systems and hierarchies, models of urban form, land use types and density variations in urban space, different statistical methods for the description and analysis of spatial distributes and gives a critical summary of planners value judgments towards land use planning in urban areas.


Course Learning Outcomes

The student who passes the course satisfactorily will be able to realize as a planner that explanations cannot always be found in observed phenomena or spatial outcomes but must be soughht in the general structures to whhich they relate and that relations among component parts are more significant than individual parts. Clues to urban issue does not lie in urban environment but in the encompassing socio-economic system of which the city is an outcome.
