Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will:
- Understand the fundamentals of urban transport systems and the role of transport policy and planning in shaping cities.
- Explore the interrelationship between transport systems and land-use planning, recognizing how urban form and mobility influence each other.
- Gain proficiency in key transport planning techniques, including transport modeling, traffic and demand management, road network design, and public transport planning.
- Evaluate sustainable transport policies and understand frameworks for promoting sustainable urban mobility.
Course Content
Fundamental knowledge about urban transport, transport policy, and transport planning, with specific emphasis on the links between transport and land-use, and similarly between transport planning and urban (land-use) planning; urban transport in its economic, social, political and environmental context; transport planning techniques, including transport modelling, demand and traffic management, road network planning, and planning of public transport systems; sustainable mobility and policy framework for sustainable transport; urban transport in developing country context; urban transport policy and projects in Ankara.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Define and explain core concepts of urban transport, transport policy, and transport planning.
- Critically assess the role of transport in shaping urban economic, social, and environmental dynamics.
- Compare and contrast different approaches to traffic and demand management, and evaluate their effectiveness in real-world settings.
- Interpret and critique transport projects and policies, using a multidisciplinary and planning-oriented perspective.
- Develop informed policy recommendations for improving urban transport systems with consideration of local contexts.
