Course Objectives

The class will focus mainly on the digital tools used to plan and design the place. There is no one application that does everything a city and regional planner needs to do. Therefore, students will be exposed to a number of different applications. They will then learn how to integrate digital data between these different applications.

 

This course will investigate the use of digital technologies in city and regional planning profession. It will explore the tools and procedures to prepare professional drawings used to communicate design information and present that information in a professional manner.


Course Content

This course aims to introduce the use of computers in city and regional planning field, including applications for word-processing, graphic creation, and Cad-style design. It provides basic general skills in computer use that are transferable to other computer applications.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, each student should be able to:

- use a word-processor and know how to create professional reports and documents

- use an excel spread-sheet for coding and analyzing data

- use PowerPoint for preparing professional presentations

- use AutoCAD and know how to create a drawing

- know the basic principles of cartographic and visual communication and apply them to the composition of a map and poster

- lay out and plot a drawing to the plotter or to a PDF file

- identify the difference between a vector and raster graphic

- know the concepts of data management and how to assign, export and import data with AutoCAD

- use PhotoShop to render plans and edit images by integrating CAD drawings as a base

- use SketchUp for creating perspectives and sections and know the principles of 3D modeling
