The planning studio course is offered once throughout the cirriculum of the Department of City and Regional Planning. It comprises several lectures as well as design and drawing sections. The instructor team facilitates these lectures, introducing students to the fundamental concepts and tools of basic design. This enables students to apply these tools in individual design and drawing exercises, as well as collective group discussions about the submitted assignments. Therefore, the primary aim of this studio is to help students:

Develop an understanding of design thinking using abstract concepts;
Attain proficiency in visual representation;
Acquire foundational knowledge of visual design culture and design skills.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students will

  • become familiar with the basic terminologies, media, instruments and hand-drawing techniques used in city and regional planning
  • get acquainted with various concepts in design (i.e., frame of reference, order, scale, visual message, abstraction and organization)
  • understand how to transform and manipulate the essential geometric elements to create coherent compositions and generate complex patterns in two and three-dimensions
  • draw and make models as the basic tools of design representation to ensure an active integration between the eye, hand and mind
  • be able to observe, perceive, understand, (re)interpret and communicate the visual and spatial phenomena by using and implementing the basic visual codes and principles to express the constructive language of spatial design
  • acquire the skills of spatial composition, visual communication, visual thinking with the Gestalt concepts and principles, abstraction, using formal systems of order, illustrating, dimensioning and layout practices
  • pursue abstract and conceptual thinking
  • gain the introductory skills of critical thinking and creative problem solving
  • develop hand and mind coordination through manual visual representation techniques both in 2D & 3D.
