Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:

  • describe and assess the conceptual and contextual evolution of cultural heritage conservation from antiquity till today;
  • correctly define and use the basic terminology;
  • show awareness for the different values of cultural heritage in different scales
  • critically evaluate and compare philosophical arguments made by different scholars;
  • interpret and discuss critically major texts on conservation theory and draw appropriate conclusions;
  • analyze the leading paradigms and parameters in conservation;
  • institute a critical framework as to the reflections of the conservation theory and principles on the conservation approaches and implementations in different countries including Turkey.

Course Content

The historical background of restoration and conservation in different countries; important international charters; evaluation of the contemporary scopes to reach a comprehensive theoretical approach relevant for Turkey. Discussion of parameters by using practices in different countries.


Course Learning Outcomes

Student, who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:

  • describe and assess the major factors and break points in the conceptual and contextual evolution of cultural heritage conservation from antiquity till today;
  • identify the major NGOs and IGOs in conservation of cultural heritage
  • describe and discuss the main international charters concerning the conservation of cultural heritage together with their aims, contents and impacts
  • use the correct terminology and concepts in conservation of cultural heritage
  • identify different values of cultural heritage in different scales
  • correlate the impacts of social, economic and political context and forces with conservation approaches and decisions
  • appraise and compare different approaches to conservation of cultural heritage in different periods and in different geographies
  • assess and critique conservation projects and implementations considering their shaping motives and their impacts
