Course Objectives

This course will help the students to:

Understand what graduate research is; and how to go about it

Present research ideas for peer review and knowledge sharing.

Prepare a literature review on a topic of choice, preferably related to the proposed field of research.

Research the most current software related to the student’s field of interest and present at least two such softwares in class. Thus, each student will be made aware of a number of software available for different applications.

Comprehend the perils of plagiarism


Course Content

Research: What it is and what it is not. Research ethics: over and covert plagiarism. Finding/choosing a research topic and the mechanics of conducting it. Reference sources: compilation for various types of bibliography. Citations and quotations. Paraphrasing and summaries. Working outlines. Research papers/reports, theses and dissertations. Use of writing manuals: Style, grammar and punctuation. Internet and computer software. Thesis abstracts. The final report.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course the students are expected to:

Become facile with the workings of report/thesis writing;

Differentiate between formal speech and colloquialism.

Comprehend the difference between citation, quotation and plagiarism

Understand the use of computer programs in scientific research and become familiar with current software in building science.

Discuss and communicate ideas about their proposed research in an appropriate medium, within the given time limits.
