BIOL769 ADVANCED TOPICS IN IMMUNOLOGY AND CELL BIOLOGY

Course Code:2380769
METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):3 (3.00 - 0.00)
ECTS Credit:8.0
Department:Biology
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Graduate
Course Coordinator:Assist.Prof.Dr BANU BAYYURT KOCABAŞ
Offered Semester:Fall Semesters.

Course Objectives

The course aims to teach recent knowledge about immunology and cellular biology. We will read high impact papers to follow the new informations gained for the last 5 years. First review papers will be discused together and then a related research article will be presented by students. Course subjects include innate immunity, pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), pathogen-damage associated molecular patterns (PAMP and DAMP), RNA-DNA sensors, mitochondrial alarm mechanisms, vault particle, outer membrane vesicles, tight junctions and cytosolic compartments. All subjects are discussed in accordance of immunity. Therefore, the ones who have no immunobiology backgrouond are discouraged to take this course.

Course Content

New and emerging themes in immunology and cell biology with an emphasis on the mechanism of action of recently identified nucleic acid recognition receptors and second messengers. Topics include: cytosolic RNA and DNA sensors, mitochondrial stress and DNA damage related immune responses, gap junctions and their role in host defense, recent advances in inflammasome biology, newly identified cyclic dinucleotide based second messengers and their role in host defense, importance of exonucleases in health and disease, the mystries of vault particles.
