Course Objectives
The primary objectives of the course are to
- understand the current process and consequences of the Indian political and economic development
- understand the general aspects of Indian society and, thus, become familiar with India
- understand Indian matters through general current events in the media
- develop basic knowledge in India
Course Content
This course is designed to introduce students to significant social, political and cultural issues in India’s recent history and through its emergence as a modern nation state. In the first half of the course, our broad aim will be to analyze what was at stake in formulations of ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity.’ The latter half of the course will examine how these formulations relate to contemporary issues and everyday life in South Asia. How concepts such as gender, caste, religion, and nation change over time, will be explored.
Course Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to
- acquire a wider knowledge and realistic view of the current trend of social, cultural, political, and economic aspects of India
- comprehend the overall historical transformation in Indian society within a broader regional and global context
- demonstrate a good understanding of the complex issues and theoretical and empirical debates surrounding the politics, society, and economics of India
