Course Objectives

  • This course presents an introduction to aerodynamics of a rotary wing aircraft. 
  • The course will provide the students solid knowledge on the following:
    • Analysis of the main rotor aerodynamics in vertical flight and forward flight using Momentum Theory and Blade Element Theory. 
    • Rotor flapping dynamics at the introductory level. 
    • Helicopter performance and sizing calculations. 
    • Issues related to a rotary wing conceptual design.
  • A term project will get students familiar to the subjects discussed in class.
