Course Objectives
This course is conducted to
- Understand the historical and philosophical underpinnings of architectural knowledge.
- Critically engage with major theories and paradigms in architectural research.
- Develop analytical skills to evaluate architectural texts, case studies, design, and material processes.
- Formulate research fields and apply appropriate methodologies for architectural inquiry.
- Synthesize theoretical perspectives into written and verbal arguments.
Course Content
Empirical study of architectural design topics covering theoretical, methodological and evaluative issues involved in the relationship of design with practice. Case study approach to be followed emphasizing detailed and in-depth analysis of the relations between specific designs and their scientific, cultural, social, psychological and historical contexts, and design and its practice. Each study to be designed, applied and evaluated by students.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to
- Critically examine the foundations of architectural knowledge and its role in shaping theory and research.
- Analyze and interpret key theoretical paradigms in architecture, evaluating their historical and contemporary relevance.
- Define appropriate research fields to investigate architectural queries and develop original insights.
- Synthesize architectural knowledge from diverse sources to construct well-reasoned theoretical arguments.
- Produce and present an independent research paper that demonstrates a strong theoretical framework, methodological rigor, and contribution to architectural discourse.
