Course Objectives
To learn the tools and the methods for design and analysis of aerospace structures for damage tolerance and fatigue.
Course Content
Fracture mechanics, elasticity theory of singular stress fields, J-integral, R-curves, Energy release rate, fracture toughness, , fracture toughness testing and standards, stres based fatigue analysis, S/N curves, fatigue crack growth, and advanced topics such as dynamic fracture, elastoplastic fracture, interfacial fracture.
Course Learning Outcomes
Student will be able to
1. Define the asymptotic stress field around a crack tip
2. Define the stress intensity factor in relation to the asymptotic stress field
3. Define energy release rate and formulate it
4. Formulate R-curve
5. Formulate J-integral and derive its relationship to energy release rate
6. Explain the methods for determining stress intensity factor (compliance method, energy release rate and J-integral)
7. Determine fatigue life of enginnering parts using s/n curves
8. Detemine fatigue crack growth and its relationship to stress intensity factor
