Course Objectives

The students are expected to acquire the following knowledge, skills and competencies through the course:

1) Comprehensive knowledge of the basic theories and history of social movements

2) Questioning the generic theories in relation to the contemporary social movements

3) Exercising new social and political theories in explaining contemporary social movement cases

4) Creative interpretations of inter-disciplinary approaches in studying social movements


Course Content

The proposed course takes the topic of social movements into the intersections between politics and social life and political theory and sociological theory. There is one recent theoretical perspective, relational approach, which targets this intersection point by synthesising the previous sociological theories and combining them with a conception of politics. the course firstly introduces students with an in-depth reading, discussion and interpretation of the basic books in this interdisciplinary field with a particular focus on political process or contentious politics theory (relational approach). Then, the course offers to rethink political theory of action through the case of social movements and Arendtigns theory of action.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students, at the end of the course, will be able to;

1) use the concepts of prefiguration, new social movements and counter-conduct in a theoretically informed way in their graduate and post-graduate studies

2) understand the basic debates and orientations in contemporary theorizations and conceptualizations in the social movements studies field 

3) create their own theoretical-conceptual articulations in studying the social movements

4) develop critical intellectual capacities regarding the theory and its applications
