Course Objectives
At the end of this course, students will learn:
To explore the historical development and theoretical underpinnings of nationalism as a political ideology and social phenomenon. To analyze the diverse manifestations of nationalism across different regions and historical contexts, including its role in state-building, identity formation, and political movements. To critically examine key theories of nationalism, including primordialism, modernism, ethnosymbolism, and constructivism, and assess their applicability to contemporary issues. To understand the complex relationship between nationalism and other political ideologies, such as liberalism, conservatism, and socialism, and their implications for national identity and citizenship. To discuss the ethical and practical implications of nationalist ideologies, including their impact on intergroup relations, minority rights, and conflict resolution.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Identify and describe the historical origins and evolution of nationalism as a political and social phenomenon. Analyze the various forms and expressions of nationalism across different historical periods and geographical contexts. Evaluate competing theories of nationalism and their explanatory power in understanding contemporary nationalist movements and conflicts. Critically assess the role of nationalism in shaping state-building processes, national identity formation, and citizenship policies. Engage in informed discussions on the ethical dilemmas and practical challenges associated with nationalist ideologies, including their impact on social cohesion, diversity, and democracy. Apply theoretical insights from the study of nationalism to analyze case studies and current events related to nationalist movements and conflicts around the world. Synthesize knowledge of theories and practices of nationalism to develop well-reasoned arguments and perspectives on the role of nationalism in contemporary politics and society.
