Course Objectives
The course aims to familiarize students with the essential historical dynamics of Turkish politics and political structure. It will therefore focus on the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic and, by implication, on the last decades of the Empire and the formative years of the Republic. The Ottoman era will be discussed within the context of the transition as well as in its own right. In addition to significant historical events and key political figures, different perspectives offered to understand the historical trajectory in question will also be discussed and analyzed throughout the semester.
Course Content
This course is designed for providing the students with a general scheme of Turkish politics between 1923-1960 by looking at both continuities and discontinuities with the Ottoman past. It also analyses several other basic themes such as modernization nationalism the construction of nation state secularism, military and politics and democracy.
Course Learning Outcomes
- To become familiar with the main dynamics of Turkish politics in the period 1839-1939
- To be able to identify key figures and events of Turkish political structure in its early phases
- To be able to critically analyze main perspectives in understanding Turkish political history from late Ottoman times to the present
- To become familiar with key academic works and authoritative authors regarding the historiography of the period in question
