Course Objectives

This course aims to deepen the students’ understanding of urban political processes by using an urban political economy lens that draws attention to the spatiality of political processes.

Having discussed certain critical concepts such as space/place/geography on the one hand, power and the state on the other, key issues and problem areas of urban politics will be explored throughout the course.  


Course Content

Evaluating paradigmatic assumptions of urban and political theorists according to the theoretical debates around issues of urban politics and space. Identifying conflicts among political actors, civil society and capital in shaping the urban space. Analysing state policies, political mobilization and urban social movements.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students will develop an alternative approach which problematize (urban) space as a political issue.
