Course Objectives

This course will provide students with opportunities to:

  •  Explore the practical dimensions of qualitative research, such as creating a research

design, conducting interviews and observations, and analyzing qualitative data.

  • Explore the central concepts, issues, and dilemmas associated with qualitative

research.

  • Provide opportunities for students to experience the full cycle of a research

project—from initial design of the project to writing a final report.

  • Analyze qualitative research studies.
  • Become familiar with the principles and methodologies of a number of paradigms

within qualitative research (e.g., ethnographies, case studies, phenomological research,

discourse, etc.).

  • Understand a range of ethical considerations involved in conducting qualitative

research.

  • To develop scientific understanding of qualitative and quantitative research in mathematics and science education

Course Content

A framework, a process, and compositional approaches for designing a qualitative or quantitative research study in education. Deciding on a paradigm; Writing an introduction; Stating a purpose for the study; Identifying research questions and hypotheses; Stating the significance of the study; Advancing methods and procedures for data analysis.


Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to

  • conduct qualitative research projects
  • evaluate qualitative studies considering the central concepts, issues, and dilemmas associated with qualitative research
  • know and understand the principles and methodologies of a number of paradigms
    within qualitative research
  • know and understand the practical dimensions of qualitative research, such as creating a research design, conducting interviews and observations, and analyzing qualitative data.
